LONDON — Wim Wenders started principal photography Tuesday in Berlin on romantic thriller “Submergence,” which stars James McAvoy and Alicia Vikander. Filming will take place in France, Germany, Spain and Africa, before wrapping in July.
Embankment is handling international sales. UTA Independent Film Group packaged the project and is handling the U.S. sale.
The pic is based on the novel by J.M. Ledgard from a screenplay by Eric Dignam (“The Last Face”). It is the story of James More (McAvoy), a water engineer who is taken hostage in Somalia by Jihadist fighters who suspect that he is a British spy. Danielle “Danny” Flinders (Vikander) is a biomathematician working on a deep sea-diving project to support her theory of the origin of life on the planet.
James and Danny only met a few weeks earlier, in an isolated hotel on the Atlantic coast, where they were both preparing for their dangerous missions. The last thing they had in mind was falling in love: they recognize in each other the love of their lives, except they’re now worlds apart, unable to reach each other. As Danny descends to the ocean floor, she doesn’t even know if James is still alive.
Cameron Lamb is producing through Lila 9th Productions with Neue Road Movie Dritte Produktionen, while Paris-based Backup Media is financing. Co-producers are Morena Films and U Media.
Wenders’ last feature “Every Thing Will Be Fine” debuted at Berlin Film Festival last year. Wenders’ “The Beautiful Days of Aranjuez,” starring Reda Kateb, Sophie Semin and Nick Cave, has just been completed and will be released later this year.
McAvoy is represented by UTA and United Agents. Vikander is represented by UTA and Tavistock Wood.

Submergence: Shooting begins on Wim Wenders' love dramaApril 12, 2016 / in News / by Gerold Marks
Wim Wenders turns again! Yesterday began in the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin shooting the romantic drama submergence. The film took on the character actor James McAvoy, in May with X-MEN: APOCALYPSE in theaters, and Alicia Vikander who has just been awarded for THE DANISH GIRL with an Academy Award.
In his new feature film submergence, based on the novel by Jonathan M. Ledgard, he follows in a contemporary love story of oceanographer Danny Flinders, played by Alicia Vikander. By pure chance her way on the French Atlantic coast crosses the engineer James More (James McAvoy), who will be working in Somalia on a water supply project. An intense romance is inevitable. Months later they are ready apart, as one can only think: James, suspected of being a spy, in torture of jihadists, Danny in the greatest depth, submerged at the bottom of the sea. How far their love will bear? Submergence is on one side of a love story, but also a reflection of the people on earth and a meditation on mortality.
Filming for submergence will take place in Germany, France, Spain and Africa to July 2016th Very promising for submergence is again Benoît Debie cameraman operates the already caused at every thing will be fine for awesome 3D images. As producer Cameron Lamb / Lila 9th are in co-production with third parties Neue Road Movies Productions GmbH, Backup Center, Morena Films and Metro Media operates. The world distribution is Embankment Films.
Planned movie start for submergence is autumn 2017 distributed by NFP marketing & distribution, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. But as long as you do not have to wait for the next Wenders, start on 03/12/2016 THE BEAUTIFUL DAYS OF ARANJUEZ in German cinemas, this then also in stereoscopic 3D.
james Moore (James McAvoy) is an engineer and in Somalia to help to improve the local water supply. He is captured by jihadists, accused of being a British spy, tortured in solitary confinement and starved.A few weeks ago, James and Danny met in a small romantic hotel on the French Atlantic coast, where they wanted to prepare for their respective dangerous mission. The last thing they both had in meaning was to fall in love. But then they discovered the other, the love of her life. Just a few weeks later, but they are worlds apart. For James there is no way to leave Danny to contact them or at least know that he is still alive. however, Danny does not know what to make of this total radio silence. Does he love her still? Is he still alive? It's hard for her to concentrate on her dive into the depths to which it has yet been working for years.

Wim Wenders will turn to Bois des Moutiers at Varengeville-sur-Mer"Varengeville-sur-Mer, a village world"
Cinema. The cameras Wim Wenders continues this Friday, their journey to Varengeville-sur-Mer, between the hotel, the church and the beach.
After Dieppe is in the town of Varengeville-sur-Mer that shooting the latest film by Wim Wenders, Submergence, continues.A boon to the tourist resort ... and it's not the mayor of Varengeville who say otherwise. "I am very pleased to welcome a director of this caliber! His film is a work. With Wim Wenders, it's still a work, "says Patrick Boulier, not without emotion."Varengeville-sur-Mer, a village world"
Today, he took bylaws to regulate traffic in the village, "including Church Street and gorges Ailly," the chief magistrate. A scene will be shot inside the beautiful church building that overlooks the sea, another on the beach.
The adventure will also take varengevillaise life in Bois des Moutiers, closed until 5 May included. An exceptional phenomenon, "This is the first time that we close for the season, since opening in 1970," says the director, Antoine Bouchayer-Mallet. The master of the house can not reveal much information, "I am bound to a confidentiality obligation," he acknowledges.
But the mansion of the Bois des Moutiers could be the place of the beginning of the romance between the two characters in the film, which began a Christmas, after meeting on a beach. No doubt the director has flashed on the Norman charm of the establishment."It shows that the town continues the tradition of welcoming the lovers of the beautiful, sensitive to light and heritage", says Patrick Boulier, who think of the huge tourism benefits that the Wim Wenders film will result. "Varengeville-sur-Mer, a village world," jokes the first magistrate.

X-Men is just out. And I’ve been making Submergence with Wim Wenders. My next job for that is to take a month off to lose weight because I need to be all malnourished and skinny. Then we are going to go to Africa for a month and then to Spain for a few weeks to finish off.
