Actress Anya Taylor-Joy, riding a wave of raves for her performance in Robert Eggers’ THE WITCH (opening this Friday from A24), will also be seen early next year in M. Night Shyamalan’s SPLIT—which, she says, won’t be a full-on frightfest like his previous movie THE VISIT.
Not surprisingly, Taylor-Joy can’t divulge plot details of the notoriously secretive filmmaker’s latest, which also stars James McAvoy, Haley Lu Richardson, Sterling K. Brown, Jessica Sula and BOOK OF SHADOWS: BLAIR WITCH 2’s Kim Director, and opens January 20, 2017 from Universal. “It’s M. Night Shyamalan, so I don’t want to open my mouth, because I’ll get into trouble and Night will kill me—I’m so sorry!” Taylor-Joy tells us, though she adds, “I will say that SPLIT is not a horror film.”

This week I will finally be done my first pass of a cut on #Split. 11 weeks. Looked at every take of every shot, printed or not.
It's a pretty wide mix of takes in the film. A third early 1 & 2 but
plenty in the middle and an a third of the film has last takes... 13-18
It takes time to look at everything and study it. In the film days, you
had to wait while the editor cut and attatched each take. U had time
Post production on older films were almost a full year as you studied
and mastered the performances. It's just took months to go thru it all.

Finished the first cut of #Split. 400 hours of editing. Watched it for the first time all the way through... Not going to tell you anything.

I wonder if Betty will sing in Split since she is known for her iconic musical performances.
Film, stage and television star Betty Buckley
will perform at the Ridgefield Playhouse in concert on Saturday, May 7,
at 8 p.m. as part of the Broadway and Cabaret Series.
Artistic Director of the Ridgefield Playhouse Broadway & Cabaret
Series Daniel C. Levine sat down with Buckley about her upcoming show
for the following interview:
Daniel: Betty, we can’t wait to see you at The Ridgefield Playhouse,
we had Stephen Schwartz here this week and when I announced your
upcoming date, the audience immediately cheered. What does it feel like
to have such a devoted fan base?
Betty: I feel very blessed and very grateful for the people who have supported me and continue to appreciate the work that I do.
Daniel: I’ve seen you on Broadway and in concert and your voice,
acting, everything — it’s like a masterclass. At age 21, you got your
first role as Martha Jefferson in 1776. Did you ever imagine that you
would become one of the leading ladies of Broadway?
Betty: I’ve had some pretty wonderful teachers along the way who
have inspired me to continue to learn and grow as an artist. My great
teachers, including my mother Betty Bob who was a singer/dancer, have
been the source of my growth and inspiration through these years. They
taught me about all things musical theater, and most especially, Bob
Daniel: People want to know what you will be singing on May 7?
Betty: My current repertoire includes songs from my two most recent
albums, Ghostlight which was produced by the great T Bone Burnett
and Ah, Men! The Boys of Broadway, which includes many of my favorite
songs which were written for men on Broadway. I always have memory ready
if the occasion feels right for it.
Daniel: You’ve starred on Broadway in Cats, Sunset Boulevard,
Pippin, Drood, and you work in TV and film. Is it easy to move among
these three art forms?
Betty: Every job, whether it is a theater piece or film
or television, is really about the story we are telling and the
collaborators. Fundamentally, it’s all about storytelling whatever the
form. I’m very excited to share with you that I just finished shooting
M. Night Shyamalan’s newest film Split in a role he said he wrote for
me. I am one of the co-stars with James McAvoy. Split will be released
in January 2017.

What was it like working with M. Night Shyamalan?
It was definitely a learning experience, because he's a completely different kind of director than I've worked with before. Actually, on all the other movies I've done, it's been all of their first features they'd directed. I didn't even think about that until just now! Night has directed so many movies and he's got such a specific tone about how his movies are. This was a cool movie, too, because he was in control a lot. He financed a lot of the movie and he was able to have it be almost exactly what he wanted. He's very specific. And he'll literally tell you flat-out, "That sucked. Do it again."
I remember one of the first scenes I did we were improving walking to a car and he came up to [my costar] Jessica Sula and me and said, "That improv was bad. I would never say that." And then just walked away.
How do you deal with that as an actress?
At first it like "Is he kidding?" but then I realized he's just very specific. But he isn't so specific that he doesn't let you do your thing, which I really appreciated as an actor. Honesty is so important. The movie was super emotionally draining and all the scenes were at super high stakes. We were going crazy all the time, so it was good to have him be honest.
When you do an M. Night Shyamalan are you sworn to secrecy on the plot?
I didn't get a script until they offered me the part and I said, "Okay I'll do it." And then I had Night's cousin come to my house and deliver the paper script. My agents didn't see the script. My mom and dad haven't seen the script. My manager hasn't seen the script. I mean, he's so famous for his plot twists.
So you said yes to the film without seeing the script?
Yeah. Because it's M. Night Shyamalan. Because I knew the premise. I knew what the audition scene was. I knew James McEvoy was going to be in it and he's an actor I really wanted to work with. And I mean, "Why not?" It beats sitting on my couch and going out to audition after auditioning and not making any money. Luckily it ended up being a really good script.
Did working on Besties and Split at the same time help you become a better actress?
I definitely think I learned a lot. Every single set you're on is completely different. So yeah, I learned a lot about acting and the skill of acting and from watching James. But also I learned how to handle yourself onset. How to talk to people. Watching people and learning from watching them, good and bad. How to respect people and that's how you get respect. You don't get respect by being a complete dick, you know? As a person being an actor I feel like I learned a lot.
Haley Lu Richardson
It must be exciting to work on a project with M. Night Shyamalan. How did that happen and what is it like?I got the audition and it was very secretive and mysterious, of course. I didn't get the script until after I was offered the role. And I didn't meet Night until rehearsal week. It just recently dawned on me that all the movies I've ever done were with first-time directors and Night is so seasoned and confident in what he does that it was a completely different experience. He is very clear about what he wants and it was my job as an actress to bring that exact thing but still being true to my instincts.
Can you reveal a bit about your role in the project?(Laughs) No. I think Night would disown me if I did. All I'll say is that James McAvoy is going to be brilliant and stuff gets real intense.
