As one of the most successful films of 2017 so far, M. Night Shyamalan’s Split is widely considered a stellar return to form for the Academy Award-nominated writer/director, in addition to boasting a tour de force performance from its star, James McAvoy.
McAvoy portrays a man with 24 distinct personalities who has kidnapped three young girls – but being a Shyamalan film, not everything is what it seems. The film – a hit with critics and fans alike – walks a tightrope between humor and terror with McAvoy’s many diverse characters, particularly Miss Patricia, a stern religious woman with an unsettlingly calm demeanor.
Despite McAvoy also embodying the ill-tempered and obsessive-compulsive Dennis or the naïve child Hedwig, Miss Patricia was the undisputed favorite among the cast and crew.
“She’s a kinky nun and nuns are just terrifying,” McAvoy told ET earlier this year. “There’s something about their robes I find scary.”
“The funnest character to be around is Patricia for sure,” Shyamalan agreed. “When you’re in the room with Patricia, when James is playing Patricia, it’s hilarious and scary -- he plays her very severe and stoic.”
“Patricia is also slightly kinky and that sort of unwavering faith – her faith is kind of misplaced as well,” McAvoy added.
Anya Taylor-Joy, one of the young girls held captive by McAvoy’s multiple personalities, undoubtedly agreed with them both.
“Patricia is just so desperate to be a part of the girls, that I think she has a sort of fascination with that, and it was creepy,” the actress said.
For audiences who also had affection for Patricia, fear not (or maybe you should?), there’s actually more of her that you didn’t get to see.
In ET’s exclusive deleted scene from the film, Patricia is at her creepiest while educating her young captors on “carcass feeding.”

We at Collider are happy to debut an exclusive behind-the-scenes clip from the upcoming Blu-ray release of Split, filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan’s
taut psychological thriller. The film remains one of 2017’s biggest
hits, grossing over $270 million against a budget of just $9 million.
The ending had everyone talking, and it’s one of those
filmgoing experiences that’s tough to forget, putting Shyamalan squarely
back into must-see territory.
In this behind-the-scenes clip, Shyamalan talks about his working relationship with James McAvoy on the film in very candid terms, as cast members like Anya Taylor-Joy and Betty Buckley describe the unique experience of working with Shyamalan.
The Blu-ray and DVD release of Split include an alternate ending and deleted scenes, as well as a trio of featurettes—The Making of Split, which dives into the inception of the project; The Many Faces of James McAvoy, which focuses on McAvoy’s performance; and The Filmmaker’s Eye: M. Night Shyamalan, which zeroes in on Night’s technique.
Check out the behind-the-scenes clip in the video below. Split is currently available on Digital HD and will be available on Blu-ray, DVD, and VOD on April 18th.

We've had some massive box office success in the shape of Beauty & The Beast (over $1 billion and counting) and Fast & Furious 8 (biggest opening weekend of all time), as well as some major flops like The Space Between Us ($7m on a $30m budget) and A Cure For Wellness ($25m on a $40m budget).
But numbers only account for so much, and what we're looking for here is quality.
So with that in mind, here are our Top 5 and Bottom 5 movies of 2017 so far:
#5 Best - Split
This came as a massive surprise to just about everyone, especially since writer/director M. Night Shyamalan was on a bit of roll in terms of having the Worst Career Trajectory Ever. It turns out that all he really needed to do was have a bit of fun, and then give James McAvoy the kind of role that in every normal universe would win him an Oscar but will get very snubbed because this is "just a horror movie". And then there's that ending which left fans of a certain Bruce Willis movie with their jaws on the floor.

NEW! Dive into the eerie typographic title sequence of @MNightShyamalan's new film SPLIT, designed by @FilmographLA http://artofthetitle.com/title/split/
The opening to M. Night Shyamalan’s Split is a
sinister and sophisticated introduction to a twisted character, a
glimpse into a fractured mind, all sharp angles and darkness.
With nods to the iconic and minimal main titles to Alien, designed by R/Greenberg Associates, and Psycho,
designed by Saul Bass, the sequence builds upon a rich title design
tradition. It’s driven by three simple ingredients: a black screen,
white typography, and the typeface Helvetica. Title sequences that focus
exclusively on typography are rare, particularly in the current context
of CGI-heavy work.
Designed by Creative Director Aaron Becker and a small team at
LA-based studio Filmograph, the opening sees each on-screen credit
sliced up, segmented into a 24-frame grid and layered, like some kind of
grim sister to the titles of The Seven Year Itch. The combination of black screens and Helvetica in white has not been used this effectively since Dan Perri’s work for All The President’s Men
in 1976. Paired with the percussive and moaning score from West Dylan
Thordson, the effect is eerie and unnerving, underlining the characters’
terrifying and blurry half-consciousness. The sound oscillates between
low growls and far-off, bleary screeches, like heavy creatures moving in
dark corners — nightmares on the edge of reality.
To cap off the experience of the film, Filmograph also created an end
sequence to suit. The splitting process hinted at in the opening is
brought full circle, with the end credit crawl running down-screen not
once but 25 times simultaneously. At the close of the film, the
personalities of the main character are revealed, each square in the
24-frame grid repeating the crawl and echoing his many identities. The
sequences are stark, chilling, and innovative while performing their
primary purpose: setting up M. Night Shyamalan’s film and letting it
shine in the dark.

I like the first design of 23 different fonts representing the same word. It captures the essence of the story better than the jarring pattern they used. JMHO

James McAvoy who greeted in Japanese as "Good evening, James McAvoy, thank you for today!" Continuously, M. Knight Shamaran also showed fluent Japanese with "I am a knight at nice.Nice to meet you, please do!", And the audience gave me great cheers.
McAvoy, who came to Japan for the first time in nine years, seems to have had a short time at the time of my first visit to Japan. "This time, I was able to spend time and I was able to meet many people. I think that it is very friendly and kind, and I think that it is a fashionable and stylish city, "she seems to enjoy staying in Japan. In addition, "I saw about 30 people while drinking coffee yesterday, but I thought that everyone was determined fashionable and perfect," I touched the Japanese fashion and revealed that it is a good impression.
Continuously, Director Shamaran coming to the seventh visit "I would like to go to a comic book store, please introduce me if there is a nice place." Continuously, in the Academy Awards ceremony held in February, I was touched about the mistake at the time of publication of the work prize and said that I tweeted "That scenario was written by me" and said, "I also like TV A friend who was in the venue also had an expression of surprise, and she was surprised at himself by the tremendousness of its response, "Reweeding about 10,000 caught in a moment!" In addition, Director Shamaran is expected to be "Dendenba", but Director Shamaran said, "I like the type of storytelling that I'm daringly concerned about. I am convinced that this is a genre and I watch it in the last scene It is betrayed, in fact it is completely different genres of movies to be able to finish, it is a point of enjoyment for myself, "he told about his own movie production.
Also, McAvoy, who just celebrated his 38th birthday on April 21st, revealed that "I went to a robot restaurant (in Japan) on my birthday day," laughing and saying "It was the most crazy ever" It was. When asked to Japanese guests, "Is this here for Westerners?" To a large number of foreign customers, they revealed that they were taught that "Japanese are already here." In addition, blessed from the audience as "Happy Birthday!" Maka Voi had a full smile. At the event, a lot of questions were received from the audience who just saw the movie, and MakaVoi and Shamaran positively and seriously answered, including spoilers, and there were scenes where the audience gave themselves insults.
Finally, there was also a scene where Maka Voi wished for McAvoy to wish for flashing, and in that situation, Maka Voi wrapped in the dazzling flash of audiences who filled the venue and Maka Voi took Selphy . Even after the photo session ended, the cheers from the fans did not stop, McAvoy and coach Shamaran exited while conducting a greeting with the fans.
This work is a powerful thriller work where fear, tension and excitement woven spiral. Three high school girls who were kidnapped by a suspicious man behaving suspiciously and trapped in a locked room. They will soon find out that this man is not a "one". From a nervous and frustrating adolescent Dennis, Barry of sociable and friendly nice guy, a nine - year - old innocent boy Hedwig, and even an elegant female Patricia. He was a man with 23 persons. And the surprising discovery of the 24th personality puts them in despair. It is the acting actor James McAvoy that changes the character like a kaleidoscope and gives charisma. The audience 's expectation is betrayed, the most shocking ending in the history of Shamaran.
