PAUL McStay will make a more than welcome return to Paradise when his Maestros take on Rio Ferdinand’s All-Stars in the MAESTRIO match, sponsored by Flip, on Sunday, September 7.
A host of former Celts managed by the Hoops legend will take to the field against a top select pulled together by the former Manchester United and England legend at Paradise as Celtic FC Foundation kick-off their 2014/15 season with a bang.
Many worthy causes will benefit from the day as Hoops fans gather at their own theatre of dreams once more in the name of charity.
And the Maestro is more than delighted to be asked to manage a Hoops team on such a notable occasion.
Speaking exclusively in this week’s Celtic View he said: “Everybody connected with the club knows about the charitable roots and how it all started and I think the tradition has grown even stronger over the years.
“Especially with the Celtic FC Foundation now and the big events that have taken place to raise a lot of money so now things have taken a step further with big games and loads of fundraising events.”
The MAESTRIO match follows in the footsteps of other such fundraising matches such as the games in memory of Phil O’Donnell and Tommy Burns and last season’s Stiliyan Petrov spectacular.
McStay said: “It will be nice to manage the team and it was nice to be asked when I am sure there are many others who could step into those shoes.
“But I’ll be delighted to do it for the day and looking at the list of players who have agreed to turn up already and give up their time for these worthwhile cause, it looks like it will be a great day
“I don’t know what Rio’s team is like or who is in his squad – but that will be interesting!”
He’s focusing on his own squad, though, and with the likes of Lubo Moravcik, Chris Sutton, John Hartson, Craig Bellamy, Stiliyan Petrov and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink among others already signed up, he may have the usual manager’s headache in selecting a team.
Stars of stage and screen such as James McAvoy and Martin Compston will also be appearing while there will also be a few names that McStay shared the hallowed turf of Paradise with back in the day – Frank McAvennie, Tom Boyd, Tosh McKinlay, Peter Grant, Simon Donnelly and Jackie McNamara among them.

Of course Martin Compston is in Filth and has a very "intimate" scene with James. He also played for RoW (Scotland) in Soccer Aid 2014.

JAMES McAvoy enjoys a successful acting career, most recently starring as Charles Xavier in the latest X-Men film. But now he’s preparing for a role that he never imagined he’d get – pulling on the green and white Hoops and running out at Celtic Park.
The actor and Celtic fan has signed up for the MAESTRIO Charity Match on Sunday, September 7, sponsored by Flip, and he is relishing the opportunity to play at his beloved Paradise.
“It will be fantastic,” he told the official Celtic website. “Even if I only get on for five minutes, it’s just an absolute honour to be invited.
“The thing you have to keep in mind is that you’re getting a huge gift and also keep in mind the reason why you’re there.
"So it’s a case of coming along, giving your all and trying as hard as you can, and also trying not to get overwhelmed by it all, and to honour, not just Celtic and Celtic Park, but the whole charity aspect of the occasion.
“We started as a charity and the fact that Celtic have managed to remain connected to those initial roots and the genesis of the club is amazing.
“So in this era when football seems to have become all about money, it’s just good that Celtic can stay connected to their charitable roots and keep doing these special things, and linking up with Rio Ferdinand’s foundation is great as well.”
Not surprisingly, as a Celtic fan James McAvoy is also looking forward to mixing with some of his football heroes, including the Maestro himself.
“Paul McStay looked like it was always so much easier for him on the park than everyone else, and he was always so full of grace,” he said. “
“He could have gone and played for any team and any league in the world where his talent would have been more widespread, but he stayed with Celtic and the Celtic fans have always stayed with him, and it’s just amazing that he’s coming back.”
While this will be James McAvoy’s first appearance for a Celtic team, he’s already had recent experience of the stadium, having been involved in the opening ceremony of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games ceremony.
He and Sir Chris Hoy launched a special UNICEF appeal, and it was something that he found very moving.
“I never really expected to be that emotional,” he said. “I just thought I’ll go and do something nice for UNICEF and try and raise some money.
“I was standing in the middle of Celtic Park and it was completely overwhelming. It was very special and hopefully a wee taste of what Celtic Park will be like on September 7.
“We come from a really generous city. It can be hard when it wants to be but it’s also so generous and I’ve always been really aware of that.
“And it will be nice to come back to Glasgow, to the team that I support, and in a sport dominated by money, to see that Celtic are looking out for other people.”

JAMES McAvoy has tonight made a fantastic gesture in support of this Sunday’s MAESTRIO Charity Match at Celtic Park (KO: 2pm).
The Hollywood star and Celtic fan, who is part of Paul McStay’s Maestros squad, has generously donated 1,000 match tickets and is encouraging the Celtic Family to support the event.
The Ticket Office at Celtic Park opens at 9.30am tomorrow (Thursday), and the first 1,000 Maestrio tickets sold – where the purchaser quotes ‘James McAvoy’ – will also receive a complimentary ticket, courtesy of the X-Men star.
Not surprisingly, James is looking forward to Sunday's match at Paradise and getting the opportunity to pull on his beloved green and white Hoops.
“It will be fantastic,” James told the official Celtic website. “Even if I only get on for five minutes, it’s just an absolute honour to be invited.
Net proceeds of the match, which is sponsored by Flip and Magners, will be split between Celtic FC Foundation and the Rio Ferdinand Foundation.
Celtic FC Foundation have selected UNICEF and War Child as main beneficiaries, specifically to support their humanitarian work in the Middle East.http://www.celticfc.net/news/6595
