Two filmmakers are currently trying to get to the top of an "Everest" film first: Doug Liman and Baltasar Kormakur. But the question is which one will get there first as one has lost a lead, and the other some financing.
So let's start the Liman flick, which had been slated to star Tom Hardy. Well, according to Deadline, with a March 2014 start date eyed, scheduling didn't work out and now the hunt for a new leading man is on. Benedict Cumberbatch is apparently in the mix to take over Hardy's role as George Mallory, with Joel Kinnaman, James McAvoy, Tom Hiddleston, Henry Cavill, Luke Evans, Dan Stevens, Matthew Goode and Jim Sturgess being tossed around to play George Finch, in the adaptation of Jeffrey Archer's "Paths Of Glory" that will tell the true tale of the first man to climb Mount Everest.
it seems like a wishlist right now, rather than anything concrete. Why?
For the simple reason that there is no way that Cavill would be
available for a March 2014 start given that "Batman Vs. Superman"
is supposed to start filming early next year, so we'll just have to see
which of these names are real and which fall by the wayside. But it
seems we might find out soon with Sony gunning to beat Universal and Working Title with their movie.
That project, which has Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes and Jason Clarke slated to star, will
tell the true story of the 1996 expedition up the famed mountain, when a
storm hit mid-climb and eight explorers lost their lives. Emmett/Furla
Films recent backed out as co-financiers leaving Universal and Working
Title left to find someone else to step in, and given that cast, it's
likely they will. But will it be soon enough to get things rolling
before the other movie? Only time will tell.

This could be an interesting role for James if it comes about...and as long as it's a WELL WRITTEN script.

Jason Blum is producing the supernatural thriller.
James McAvoy is in negotiations to star in M. Night Shyamalan’s latest supernatural thriller, an untitled project being produced by genre-loving Jason Blum.
The X-Men actor is stepping into the shoes that seemed initially earmarked for Joaquin Phoenix and would have marked a reunion between the filmmaker and one of the stars of his 2002 hit Signs.

Reasons for Phoenix’s exit were not revealed but sources said a deal was never made, with one source saying the process never got past the discussion stage.
Talking about secrets, the plot of Shyamalan’s project is also under the veil but it is serving as his follow-up to The Visit, currently in theaters. The horror movie has grossed over $53 million on a budget of $5 million.
Marc Bienstock is also producing the new movie project. Ashwin Rajan and Steven Schneider are on board as exec producers.
McAvoy has become one of the key stars of Fox’s X-Men franchise, along with Jennifer Lawrence and Michael Fassbender, and recently wrapped shooting his third entry, X-Men: Apocalypse.
He also has Victor Frankenstein, a revisionist take on the Frankenstein story that co-stars Daniel Radcliffe, awaiting a Nov. 25 release. McAvoy is repped by UTA and United Agents.

James McAvoy to Star in M. Night Shyamalan’s Next Movie
October 2, 2015 | 11:01AM PT
James McAvoy will star in M. Night Syamalan’s next project after a deal could not be made for Joaquin Phoenix to star.
Shyamalan would direct with Jason Blum on board to produce.
As with any Shyamalan project, plot details are under lock and key, but the project will likely include elements of the supernatural. Given Blum’s involvement, the project’s budget will probably be relatively small, which would be more on par with Shyamalan’s “The Visit,” which has overperformed at the box office since bowing in September, bringing in $53 million and counting in U.S. grosses on a budget of $5 million.
Marc Bienstock also produces, while Ashwin Rajan and Steven Schneider are on board as exec producers. Production is expected to start this November in Philadelphia. The film is currently not set up at a studio.
McAvoy can be seen next in Fox’s “Victor Frankenstein” as the iconic doctor. He is also set to star in “X-Men: Apocalypse” as Professor X next summer.
He is repped by UTA and United Agents. The news was first reported by the Hollywood Reporter.

McAvoy, who came on the scene in a major way ten years ago with his performance in The Last King of Scotland and followed that up with another critically-acclaimed turn in Atonement, just finished The Coldest City with Charlize Theron. He has clearly been balancing his acting skills between both commercial and critical fare and doing exceptionally well in both.
He is repped by UTA and United Artists in the U.K.http://deadline.com/2016/09/james-mcavoy-sci-fi-thriller-extinction-1201810268/

Comic-book character is a killing machine brought back from the dead
Sony has assembled a wish list for actors to lead the comic-book movie
“Bloodshot” that includes Oscar Isaac, James McAvoy, Jake Gyllenhaal,
Nicholas Hoult, and Mark Wahlberg, an insider familiar with the search
told TheWrap exclusively.
Sony is gearing up to make an offer for the lead on the comic-book
series from Valiant Entertainment, and has a shortlist of eight actors,
said the insider, who shared five of the names with TheWrap. The fact
that the actors are on the wish list doesn’t necessarily mean Sony is in
talks with them.
Sony and reps for the actors did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Valiant’s 2012 “Bloodshot” series is about a man brought back from
the dead and infused with nanotechnology that turns him into a killing
machine. Created by Kevin VanHook, Don Perlin, and Bob Layton in 1992,
The character has helped Valiant sell more than 7 million copies in
multiple languages worldwide.
“Bloodshot” will be produced by “Fast & The Furious” franchise producer Neal Moritz, Toby Jaffe
and Valiant’s Dinesh Shamdasani. and directed by director Dave Wilson
(“Deadpool” director Tim Miller’s partner at Blur Studios). The script
is by “Arrival” screenwriter and Oscar nominee Eric Heisserer.
“Bloodshot” is slated to be the first in a series of shared universe
Valiant films at Sony Pictures and will be followed by “Harbinger” —
about Valiant’s team of superpowered teenagers on the run — which will
also written by Heisserer.
